Google AI Overviews is the AI answer most Indian users see without asking for it, sitting on top of a normal search. It is also the least selective of the five engines about where it gets its information, and that shapes everything about how you win it.
We classified every source AI Overviews cited across the August 2026 Cited Index, 3,159 citations, the largest sample of any engine because it cites so many sources per answer:
| Source type | Share of AI Overviews' citations |
|---|---|
| Brand websites | 54% |
| Community and social | 22% |
| Marketplaces | 11% |
| Editorial | 6% |
| Review platforms | 3% |
| Other | 4% |
The defining number is not in the table: about ten sources per answer
AI Overviews lists roughly ten sources per answer, more than three times what Google's own AI Mode shows, and that number is the strategy. When an engine cites ten sources, being one of many present matters more than being the single obvious leader.
And the off-site half is unmistakably social. Its largest non-brand source is Instagram, by a wide margin, followed by YouTube, then Amazon, then Reddit and Quora. No other engine leans on Instagram and social video the way AI Overviews does. Where Gemini reads mostly your own website, AI Overviews reads the whole neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood skews social.
Why your competitor keeps showing up
The answer is coverage. They are present in more places than you are. With ten sources per answer, AI Overviews rewards a brand that appears on Instagram, on YouTube, in a marketplace listing, and in a community thread, all at once. A competitor with that spread gives the engine several independent places to find them. A brand strong on only its own website, or only one social channel, gets crowded out of a wide citation list by brands that are simply more present.
This is the engine where a broad, if shallow, footprint beats a narrow deep one. It is also the engine most forgiving of a brand that is genuinely everywhere its customers are.
How to read your own AI Overviews gap

We'll run 20 prompts across 3 AI platforms and send your report within 24 hours.
- Count your surfaces. Instagram, YouTube, marketplaces, community, your own site. AI Overviews rewards being on many. If you are strong on one and absent on the rest, that is your gap.
- Prioritise social and visual. Instagram and YouTube are its two largest non-brand sources. A thin presence there costs you more here than on any other engine.
- Do not over-optimise a single surface. Depth on one channel is the wrong shape for an engine that cites ten sources. Spread matters more than perfection.
One caveat before you spend
The roughly ten-sources figure is an edition average, and it swings by query type: a broad consumer question pulls far more sources than a narrow one, so treat ten as the centre of a range, not a constant. The pattern holds either way, and AI Overviews rewards being present across many surfaces, led by social. It is one of five engines with different diets, mapped in how the five weight sources, and its sibling Google AI Mode plays the opposite game, worth reading next if you sell into Google's surfaces.
So the move here is coverage, not perfection. AI Overviews shows the brands that are simply in more of the places it reads, and social is the first place to be.
Methodology. 3,159 Google AI Overviews citations in the August 2026 Cited Index, classified by source-domain type and pooled by citation count across 339 brands in 12 categories; sources-per-answer is an edition average. Aggregate and market-wide: no individual brand is named, only public cited-source domains and types; a different measurement system from the per-brand Citation Mix in the Cited dashboard. Citation Source Mix is the sixth of the Cited 8 metrics.
