Google AI Mode is the conversational, follow-up-friendly version of Google's AI answers, and it behaves almost nothing like the AI Overviews that sits above regular search. The difference is not the sources it likes. It is how few it uses.
We sorted all 918 sources AI Mode cited in the August 2026 Cited Index by type:
| Source type | Share of AI Mode's citations |
|---|---|
| Brand websites | 54% |
| Community and social | 20% |
| Marketplaces | 15% |
| Editorial | 5% |
| Review platforms | 2% |
| Other | 4% |
The defining number: about three sources per answer
AI Mode cites roughly three sources per answer, the fewest of any engine and less than a third of what its sibling AI Overviews shows. That scarcity is the whole strategy. When an engine has only three seats, being present is not enough; the brands that make the cut are the two or three its sources most clearly agree on.
And its off-site diet is the most commercial of the five engines. AI Mode has the highest marketplace share of any engine at 15%, and its single largest non-brand source is amazon.in, followed by Reddit and YouTube. For consumer products especially, a strong, consensus marketplace and community signal is what earns one of the few seats.
This is the exact opposite of how AI Overviews rewards breadth across about ten sources. It is the same company as AI Overviews and almost the reverse of it, so a brand tuned for one is not automatically tuned for the other.
Why your competitor keeps making the short list
Because they are an obvious answer and you are a plausible one. Ten seats leave room for plausible brands; three do not. If your competitor is the brand the marketplace reviews, the Reddit threads, and their own strong pages all point to, AI Mode has a clear consensus to name, and it names them. A credible challenger who is not yet top-of-mind gets squeezed out of the short list.
Winning AI Mode is therefore less about adding another surface and more about becoming the default answer on the surfaces that already matter, marketplaces and community above all.
How to read your own AI Mode gap

- Check whether you are a consensus pick. Across your marketplace ratings, community discussion, and own pages, are you clearly one of the top two or three, or merely present? AI Mode only rewards the former.
- Prioritise marketplace strength for consumer products. It is AI Mode's highest off-site share and its top source. A weak Amazon presence hurts here more than on any other engine.
- Do not confuse AI Overviews success with AI Mode success. Ranking in the ten-source engine does not mean you hold a seat in the three-source one. Test both.
One caveat, and it matters here
This one carries more weight than it does for the other engines. AI Mode's sample is the smallest of the five (918 citations), and the sources-per-answer figure is an average, so treat these numbers as directional rather than precise. The direction is clear enough to act on: with only about three seats, AI Mode names the brands its sources most obviously agree on. It is one of five engines with different diets, mapped in how the five weight sources. Read your own citations before committing a plan.
That scarcity is the opportunity as much as the obstacle. Three seats means the engine is naming a short, obvious list, and the whole game is becoming one of the names on it.
Methodology. 918 Google AI Mode citations in the August 2026 Cited Index, classified by source-domain type and pooled by citation count across 339 brands in 12 categories; sources-per-answer is an edition average, and AI Mode has the smallest per-engine sample. Aggregate and market-wide: no individual brand is named, only public cited-source domains and types; a different measurement system from the per-brand Citation Mix in the Cited dashboard. Citation Source Mix is the sixth of the Cited 8 metrics.
