How Gemini Decides Which Brands to Recommend (and Why It Cites Your Competitor)

By Salman Shaikh, Cited

If you have spent your GEO effort so far on your own website, schema, clean pages, and structured content, there is one engine where that work is already paying off in full. It is Gemini.

Gemini's 1,614 citations in the August 2026 Cited Index, classified by source type, put it at the far end of the five engines:

Source typeShare of Gemini's citations
Brand websites72%
Marketplaces9%
Editorial9%
Review platforms3%
Community (Reddit, YouTube)2%
Other5%

Seventy-two percent brand sites, and community at 2%. That is almost the exact inverse of ChatGPT, which reads brand sites 42% and Reddit heavily. Gemini reads what brands publish about themselves and pays little attention to what communities say.

Gemini reads your website, backed by Google's index

This follows from what Gemini is. It runs on Google's web index and infrastructure, and it favours the structured, crawlable content Google already understands. Its thin off-site layer is telling: a little Reddit, some marketplaces like Nykaa and Flipkart that come through Google Shopping, and mainstream editorial like Forbes and specialist tech press. There is no wide net here. Gemini reads the brand's own site, plus a light dusting of authoritative publishers.

For a marketer, this is the simplest engine to reason about. The thing you fully control, your own pages, is 72% of the answer. Where Perplexity rewards a wide net of retrievable sources, Gemini rewards being clean, structured, and legible to Google.

Why your competitor gets cited here

When 72% of citations are brand sites, the contest is won on the pages themselves. If Gemini cites a competitor and not you, it is usually because their site is more extractable, better structured, or more authoritative in Google's index than yours. Not because they have a louder community presence, which barely registers here.

That makes Gemini the most directly winnable engine for a team willing to do owned-content work. You are not waiting to earn your way onto Reddit or into a publisher's roundup. You are competing on whether your own pages are the cleaner, more complete, more crawlable answer, and that is entirely within your control. The allocation logic for exactly this is in where to spend on-site versus off-site.

  1. Check crawlability first. If Google cannot cleanly crawl and parse your pages, Gemini has nothing to read. Robots rules, rendering, and structured markup matter more here than anywhere.
  2. Compare page quality, not follower counts. Put your key pages next to a competitor's. Whose reads as extractable facts, whose reads as a slogan? That gap is your Gemini gap.
  3. Do not expect community work to move it. The Reddit and YouTube effort that wins ChatGPT will do almost nothing on Gemini. Spend accordingly.

Where this holds and where it bends

One qualifier. The 72% is a market-wide average, and it bends by vertical: Gemini's marketplace share rides Google Shopping, so a category Google Shopping ignores reads differently from this blended figure. What holds across the board is the direction, and it is a strong one: Gemini reads owned pages far more than any other engine, and community almost not at all. It is one of five engines with different diets, mapped in how the five weight sources. Confirm the split on your own category before you bet the plan on it.

The upshot is unusually clean for this field. If you are going to win one engine with owned content, make it Gemini, because owned content is most of what it reads.

Methodology. 1,614 Gemini citations in the August 2026 Cited Index, classified by source-domain type and pooled by citation count across 339 brands in 12 categories. Aggregate and market-wide: no individual brand is named, only public cited-source domains and types; a different measurement system from the per-brand Citation Mix in the Cited dashboard. Citation Source Mix is the sixth of the Cited 8 metrics.
