In Indian Skincare, Gemini Reads Your Website and ChatGPT Doesn't

By Salman Shaikh, Cited

Run the same skincare prompt, say "best sunscreen for oily skin in India," through Gemini and then through ChatGPT, and the two engines reach for almost opposite sources to answer it. That difference is the thing a skincare marketer most needs to know, because it decides whether your own website or your off-site presence does the work. We come to it in a moment.

First the blended picture. We classified all 804 citations across Skincare & Beauty in the August 2026 Cited Index, five engines. The single most-cited domain in the category is not your website and not Amazon. It is instagram.com, at roughly 11% of citations, ahead of reddit.com and nykaa.com:

Source typeShare of skincare citations
Brand websites42%
Community and social (Instagram, Reddit, YouTube)25%
Marketplaces (Nykaa, Amazon)20%
Editorial10%
Review and other3%

Two things make skincare distinctive. Community is a quarter of the citations, higher than most categories, and it is led by Instagram rather than the Reddit or YouTube that lead audio and travel. And marketplaces are 20%, also higher than most categories, because skincare buyers genuinely research on Nykaa and Amazon. Your own site is the largest single type at 42%, but the majority of the citations are off-site.

The split: Gemini reads your site, ChatGPT doesn't

This is the difference the intro promised, and it is large enough to change your whole plan. Within skincare, the engines disagree sharply on how much they read your own website:

EngineSkincare citations from brand-owned sites
Gemini~62%
ChatGPT~26%

On Gemini, your own pages are doing most of the citation work. On ChatGPT, only about a quarter is your site; the rest is assembled from Instagram, Reddit, and editorial. That is a 36-point gap inside one category, on the same prompts. Pour everything into your website and you win Gemini but lose ChatGPT; pour it all into Instagram and you flip the result. This is the per-engine reality behind how the five AI engines read different source diets, seen from inside a single category.

The practical read: know which engine your buyers actually use before you weight the plan. If your audience skews to Google's surfaces and Gemini, your website earns the investment. If they skew to ChatGPT, the off-site layer does.

The playbook, in priority order

For a skincare brand playing across engines, weight the effort to the blended source mix and adjust per engine:

  1. Instagram, the largest single source. Creator content, honest reviews, and ingredient explainers from the accounts your buyers follow. This is where a model looks first when it wants to know what people say about a serum. On ChatGPT especially, this is load-bearing.
  2. Reddit and the Indian skincare communities. Genuine presence in the subreddits where routines get discussed. Answer real questions; never plant promotion, because the community and the model both read the sentiment.
  3. Marketplace listings on Nykaa and Amazon (20%). Higher-value in skincare than most categories. Rich, accurate listings with real ingredient and use-case detail.
  4. Your own product pages (42%, and decisive on Gemini). Clear ingredient lists, concern-and-solution content, and extractable facts. This is where you win Gemini and hold your share everywhere.
  5. Editorial (10%). Inclusion in beauty and lifestyle roundups. Smaller here than in some categories, but a clean tie-breaker.

Take five prompts a real buyer types, like "best sunscreen for oily skin in India" or "vitamin C serum for beginners." Run each across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Copy the cited sources. Group them by type and by engine. You will see your own version of the table above, and you will see which engine is reading your site versus reading Instagram. That map, not a generic checklist, is your plan. This is the same category-then-engine method we apply to where to spend on-site versus off-site.

One honest caveat

Two things to keep in mind. This is the Indian skincare market measured in aggregate, not a forecast for your specific brand, and it shows where the engines look rather than proving that one Instagram push earns you the citation. The per-engine numbers also ride a thinner sample than the pooled total, so take the 62-versus-26 gap as a strong directional signal and confirm it on your own prompts before you bet the plan on it.

So the instruction most skincare brands are missing is not a single tactic. It is that the engine your buyers use should reshape the plan: build for your own site where they lean toward Gemini, and for Instagram and community where they lean toward ChatGPT. Which playbook you run is decided by the engine, not by a generic checklist.

Methodology. 804 skincare citations in the August 2026 Cited Index, classified by source-domain type and pooled by citation count across five engines; per-engine cuts (Gemini and ChatGPT brand-owned share) computed on the category's per-engine samples, which are thinner than the pooled total. Aggregate and market-wide: no individual brand is named, and this is a different measurement system from the per-brand Citation Mix in the Cited dashboard. Citation Source Mix is the sixth of the Cited 8 metrics.
