Reddit for Indian D2C: The GEO Play Nobody's Talking About

By Salman Shaikh, Cited

Reddit is the most-cited domain by Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. The second most-cited by ChatGPT. In Profound's publicly reported analysis of 30 million citations between August 2024 and June 2025, no other domain appeared more frequently in AI-generated answers across these platforms.

Google pays Reddit $60 million a year for real-time content access. OpenAI has a separate licensing deal — estimated at roughly $70 million annually based on Reddit's disclosure that AI licensing represents about 10% of its $1.3 billion revenue. Reddit's total AI licensing contract value reached $203 million across multi-year deals as disclosed in its 2024 IPO prospectus — and it's pushing for dynamic pricing that increases as AI platforms rely more heavily on its content.

Now here's the part that should bother every Indian D2C founder: when Perplexity answers "best moisturiser for oily skin in India", it's pulling from r/IndianSkincareAddicts — a community of 277,000+ members actively discussing your category, your competitors, and possibly your brand. When Google AI Overviews summarises "which Indian luggage brand is best for frequent flyers", Reddit threads are among the first sources it cites.

And almost no Indian D2C brand has a Reddit strategy. Most don't even know these communities exist.

Where AI models actually get their information

We've been tracking a stat all week that keeps reshaping how we think about GEO: only 38% of AI Overview citations now come from top-10 organic results. Down from 76% in mid-2025. In nine months, AI models shifted dramatically toward non-traditional sources.

Reddit is the single biggest beneficiary of that shift.

PlatformReddit's Citation RankingContext
Google AI Overviews#1 most-cited domainGoogle's $60M/year licensing deal ensures real-time access
Perplexity#1 most-cited domainIndexes Reddit threads in near-real-time
ChatGPT#2 most-cited domainUses Reddit as proxy for real user sentiment

Why does Reddit rank this high? Three structural reasons.

Specificity. Reddit discussions are hyper-specific. A thread on r/IndianSkincareAddicts doesn't discuss "skincare" in general — it discusses "Minimalist 10% Niacinamide vs Deconstruct 5% Niacinamide for oily skin in humid climate, ₹500 budget." That level of specificity matches the conversational queries users ask AI models. When a user asks Perplexity a specific question, Perplexity finds a Reddit thread with a specific answer.

Authenticity. AI models weigh source credibility. Reddit's upvote system surfaces community-validated opinions. A product recommendation that earned 200 upvotes on r/IndianSkincareAddicts carries more weight — for the AI model, not just for human readers — than a brand's own product page claiming the same thing.

Recency. Reddit discussions happen in real-time. New product launches get discussed within days. Formulation changes get flagged within hours. AI models that index Reddit get access to the freshest consumer sentiment on the internet — faster than review sites, faster than blogs, faster than most brand websites update their own content.

The Indian Reddit landscape nobody's mapping

Here's what surprises most Indian D2C founders when I bring up Reddit: India's Reddit communities are massive, active, and deeply opinionated about consumer brands.

SubredditMembersRelevant D2C Categories
r/IndianSkincareAddicts277K+Skincare, serums, sunscreens, haircare
r/IndianMakeupAddictsActiveBeauty, cosmetics, fragrance
r/IndianFashionAddictsActiveApparel, accessories, footwear
r/indiaMulti-millionTravel, electronics, general consumer
r/indiainvestmentsActiveFintech, credit cards, payments
r/IndianGamingActiveElectronics, audio, wearables

Discussions in these communities include ingredient analyses, brand comparisons, dupe recommendations, and honest reviews that would make any brand's PR team nervous.

These communities are not fringe. They're where India's most informed, high-intent consumers discuss purchases before buying. And every discussion feeds the AI models that increasingly drive discovery.

The brands that get discussed in these subreddits — even negatively, even in mixed reviews — have a structural advantage in AI search. A Reddit thread debating "Is Mokobara worth ₹5,000 or should I get Uppercase?" is exactly the content Perplexity cites when answering luggage queries.

The brands absent from Reddit? AI models have nothing to cite. No Reddit presence = no Perplexity visibility for a growing share of queries.

Understanding the mechanism helps you think strategically about Reddit's role in your GEO efforts.

Perplexity indexes Reddit in near-real-time. Its retrieval system treats highly upvoted, specific product discussions as primary sources for experiential queries. When you ask Perplexity a "best X for Y" question, Reddit threads rank as top citation sources more often than brand websites do.

Google AI Overviews pulls Reddit discussions into cited sources — especially for "best X" and "X vs Y" queries. Google's $60M/year licensing deal with Reddit ensures Reddit content is indexed deeply and surfaced prominently. When Google's AI generates an overview about Indian skincare brands, Reddit threads are among the first sources it evaluates.

ChatGPT uses Reddit as a proxy for real user sentiment. When genuine users discuss your product on Reddit — sharing experiences, comparing alternatives, debating value — ChatGPT treats that as social proof. It's stronger signal than your own product page marketing copy, because it comes from independent users with no incentive to promote you.

The chain: Reddit discussion → AI model indexes it → user asks AI a question → AI cites the Reddit thread → your brand gets mentioned. Or doesn't.

The Indian D2C Reddit playbook — without being spammy

Let me be direct: Reddit will destroy your brand reputation faster than any platform if you try to market on it. The communities detect promotional content within minutes. Accounts get banned. Brands get called out publicly. I've seen it happen.

This playbook is about earning Reddit discussions, not manufacturing them.

1. Seed genuine product experiences.

When you launch a new product, send it to Reddit-active consumers in your category — not as a paid promotion, but as a genuine sample for honest review. Find users who are already active on r/IndianSkincareAddicts or the relevant subreddit and offer samples with zero strings attached. Let them post their experience — positive, negative, or mixed. A mixed review on Reddit is more valuable for AI visibility than no review at all.

2. Monitor brand mentions — but don't try to control them.

Set up alerts for your brand name, product names, and category keywords on Reddit. When someone posts "Has anyone tried [Your Brand]?" — that's a signal. That discussion, whatever direction it takes, becomes content AI models can cite.

Do not jump into threads with corporate responses unless genuinely helpful. Reddit users can smell a brand account from three comments away.

3. Participate as experts, not marketers.

If your brand has a dermatologist, a formulation chemist, a textile engineer, or any category expert — have them participate in relevant subreddits as themselves. Answering questions, sharing knowledge, contributing genuine expertise. Never selling.

Reddit respects expertise. A chemist explaining why a particular niacinamide concentration works better for Indian skin types earns upvotes — and those upvoted, expert responses are exactly what AI models prioritise.

4. Create content Reddit naturally links to.

Publish original research, ingredient breakdowns, comparison data, or category benchmarks on your blog. Reddit users link to genuinely useful content in their discussions. Those links then get indexed by AI models — and the combination of your blog content + Reddit discussion citing it creates a powerful dual citation signal.

This is where your on-site GEO strategy and off-site Reddit presence compound. Good blog content gets discussed on Reddit. Reddit discussions citing your content get picked up by AI models. The AI model cites both.

5. Accept that Reddit is messy — and that's fine.

Users will criticise your product. They'll compare you unfavourably to competitors. They'll post about a bad customer service experience. That's Reddit.

Here's why it doesn't matter for GEO: AI models cite discussions, not conclusions. A Reddit thread with mixed opinions about your brand is still a thread about your brand. It establishes your relevance in the category. It gives AI models content to reference. A brand with ten Reddit threads — some positive, some critical — has vastly more AI visibility than a brand with zero.

Silence on Reddit is worse than criticism on Reddit. Criticism means you're in the conversation. Silence means you don't exist.

Measuring Reddit's GEO impact

Reddit's impact on AI visibility is real but indirect. In Cited's audits of Indian skincare and travel brands, Reddit threads consistently appear in Perplexity citation panels for category queries — often outranking brand-owned content. Here's how to track it yourself:

Track Perplexity citations. Run your top 10 category queries on Perplexity. Check if Reddit threads mentioning your brand appear in citations. If competitors' Reddit discussions show up but yours don't — that's the gap.

Track Google AI Overview sources. Search your category queries on Google. Expand the AI Overview citations. Note how many come from Reddit vs brand websites vs review sites. The ratio tells you where the AI is looking.

Track Reddit referral traffic. GA4 → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition → filter by reddit.com. Even small numbers matter — AI search referral traffic converts at dramatically higher rates than Google organic.

Track brand mention velocity. How often is your brand discussed on Reddit? Is the frequency increasing, stable, or declining? Brand mention velocity on Reddit is a leading indicator of AI visibility changes — because AI models index Reddit faster than they index most other sources.

The compound effect takes months to build but is hard for competitors to replicate. Reddit authority compounds the same way LinkedIn authority does — each genuine discussion adds to a body of citations AI models trust.

If tracking this manually feels like too much, Cited's audit reports include Reddit citation visibility as part of the Perplexity analysis — so you know exactly where Reddit threads about your brand are showing up in AI answers.

The window is open

Every Indian D2C brand fights for attention on Instagram. Every one bids on Google Shopping. Meta CPMs have risen significantly — some Indian D2C brands report increases of 40% or more since 2023. The channels everyone uses are the channels that are most expensive and most crowded.

Reddit — the #1 most-cited domain for AI Overviews and Perplexity — has near-zero competition from Indian D2C brands. The communities are there. The discussions are happening. The AI models are indexing them. The only thing missing is your brand in those discussions.

This isn't a channel you can buy your way into. It's a channel you earn — through genuine products, genuine expertise, and genuine community participation. That's exactly why it's defensible. Once you build Reddit presence, competitors can't outspend you to take it away.

The brands that figure out Reddit in 2026 will have an AI visibility moat that compounds for years. The brands that dismiss it as "not a real marketing channel" will keep wondering why Perplexity recommends their competitors.
