If you have measured your brand's AI citation share, you have probably asked the obvious next question: is this number good? Two percent, five percent, half a percent, is that winning or losing?
To answer it you need a benchmark, so we built one. We took the June 2026 Cited Index and, for every category, computed each brand's share of all the brand citations AI engines produced when answering buying questions in that category. The result is both humbling and, if you read it right, freeing. The median brand captures half a percent of its category, and no brand anywhere owns it.
The median brand owns 0.51%
Across ten categories, 1,044 distinct brands were cited at least once, far more than the 226 the Index formally tracks, because AI pulls brand references from a wide field of marketplaces, forums, and editorial. Among all of them, the median citation share is 0.51%. Seventy-nine percent of cited brands capture under 1% of their category. The typical brand that shows up in AI answers at all is a rounding error in its own category.
That sounds bleak until you look up, at the top of the distribution, and find it is not very high either.
Nobody owns their category
Here is the leader in each category, the single most-cited brand, as a share of all category citations.
| Category | Brands cited | Leader's share | Top 3 combined |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skincare & Beauty | 96 | 12.8% | 23.5% |
| HR & Payroll | 41 | 10.8% | 26.6% |
| Travel & Luggage | 89 | 9.4% | 22.2% |
| CRM & Sales | 44 | 9.0% | 24.5% |
| Audio & Wearables | 115 | 7.6% | 17.7% |
| Conversational AI | 127 | 6.7% | 15.2% |
| Personal Grooming | 121 | 5.9% | 14.9% |
| Pet Care | 173 | 5.6% | 14.3% |
| Health & Wellness | 137 | 4.7% | 12.2% |
| Baby Care | 166 | 3.5% | 9.9% |
Read the leader column. The most dominant brand in any Indian category we measured captures 12.8% of its citations, and that is the ceiling. In most categories the leader is under 10%, and in Baby Care the category leader holds just 3.5%. The top three brands combined rarely clear a quarter of all citations. There is no brand in this dataset that owns its category the way a top-ranked domain owns a Google results page.

Put the two ends together and you get a usable scale for reading your own number:
| Your citation share | Where that puts you |
|---|---|
| Under 1% | The pack. 79% of cited brands are here. |
| ~2% | Top 10% of your category. |
| 3% or more | A small top tier (about 68 brand-positions across the whole Index). |
| 5% or more | A category leader. Only ~28 positions in the entire Index clear it. |
So the honest answers to "is my number good": if you are under 1%, you are average, and most of your competitors are there with you. If you are at 3%, you are genuinely strong. If you are at 5% or more, you are one of a few dozen brands leading their category across all of Indian AI search.
Why AI citation is a long-tail game
This fragmentation is not noise; it is structural, and it is the opposite of what traditional SEO trained everyone to expect. On a Google results page, a handful of domains absorb most of the clicks. In AI answers, the citations scatter, because the engine is not ranking ten blue links from one index. It is assembling an answer from many different source types at once, a marketplace listing here, a Reddit thread there, a brand's own page, an editorial roundup, and every one of those can name a different brand. The attention spreads across a wide field by design.
That has a practical edge. In a fragmented category, nobody has consolidated the position yet, so the cost of becoming the cited leader is a few percentage points, not the years of domain authority a competitive Google keyword demands. The ceiling is low, which means it is also close.
Being mentioned is only half of it
You might assume citation share simply tracks how often AI mentions you: get named more, capture more citations. It only half does. Across the brands we track, how often a brand is named in AI answers correlates with its citation share at about 0.70, which sounds high until you square it, at which point being mentioned explains only about half the variation in citation share. The other half is not how often you are named, but where. A brand named inside a widely-cited marketplace listing or forum thread captures citation share; a brand the AI names in its answer but that none of its cited sources mention does not. Getting talked about and getting cited are related jobs, not the same one, which is why your source mix, not your mention volume, decides where you land on the benchmark above.
What to do with your number
First, read it against your category, not against 100%. A skincare brand at 8% is doing far better than the raw number suggests, because the category leader is at 12.8%. Second, remember that citation share and Share of Voice are relatives, and the same discipline applies: know exactly how your tool defines the denominator before you trust the percentage. Third, treat a low ceiling as an opening. Citation share, the citation-based cut of the second Cited 8 metric, is one of the few AI-visibility numbers where a mid-tier brand can realistically reach the top of its category inside a single planning cycle.
The median brand owns half a percent, and the leader owns single digits, so almost nobody owns their category. Whether that reads as discouraging or as an invitation depends entirely on which way you decide to move.
Methodology. From the June 2026 Cited Index: 226 tracked Indian brands across 10 categories and five AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode). For each category we summed every brand reference across all cited sources (1,044 distinct brands appear in total) and computed each brand's share of the category's citations. Shares are pooled counts, not averages of per-response rates. This is a market-wide Index measurement and is distinct from a single brand's citation metrics inside the Cited dashboard. Category leader shares range from 3.5% (Baby Care) to 12.8% (Skincare & Beauty); the median brand-category share is 0.51%.
